Marriage is the easy part.

marriage is the easy part

My husband and I recently attended a wedding at the same venue where we were married three and a half years ago. What a sweet experience to revisit the spot where we said “I do” – this time with our precious two year old in tow. It held all of the emotions you would expect! We captured a photo of the three of us in the same spot that we exchanged vows and became husband and wife. 1,233 days separate […]

Hello there!

I’m Brittany – the wife, mom and “maker” behind Charleston Homemaker. I thought my days of making as a career were over, then I realized they’re just getting started.

I’m on a mission to make a happy home for my family while rediscovering what makes me happy in this new season of life.

If you’re into fizzy water, walks with a view, Curious George and a good analogy – we’re sure to be fast friends. Can’t wait!

I joined a support group for one of my medications I joined a support group for one of my medications this morning. It’s an immunotherapy drug that I just refer to as the “nasty one”. The side effects are difficult. And as I read through post after post after post of other individuals on the same medication, I learned that a multitude of other things I’ve dealt with this past year are also side effects. All things I’ve blamed myself for. Things I thought were my fault. Things I figured were my receipt for not being ________ enough. For not being disciplined enough. Not exercising enough. Not researching and reading enough. Not praying enough. Not being faithful enough.

Whew. An odd sense of relief came over me. It’s not just my subconscious telling me its the medications. It’s not me using the medications as an excuse. It really is the medicine. It’s NOT my fault.

And while I felt refreshed, I did not get a refreshing vibe from the content and comments of the group. So I started typing. Sharing my story and a similar explanation of what I stated above and ending with a message that applies to all of us. For me it’s been a cancer diagnosis. For you it might be another medical battle. A troubling relationship. A situation with your children that wrecks you and rattles you all at the same time. A mountain that feels insurmountable from you current perspective. We’ve all felt it at some point - hopeless.

Hope. I was convicted to remind myself where I place my hope.
My hope for the future is not found in a drug.
My hope for today is not found in myself and my own doing (insert all the things I do to try and fix all the things.)
My hope is found in the Lord and His eternal promises.

My favorite Christmas lyric from "Oh Holy Night": A thrill of HOPE, the weary world rejoices."
I feel weary often. I'm sure you have too. Not just this time of year but every day that we try to tackle anything and everything on our own.

My prayer for myself today and all of you is to be reminded of the hope we have in Jesus. Of the hope we have in powers higher than any doctor, scan, prescription, therapist, holistic medication, paycheck, job promotion, outfit, vacation…. - you name it.
