5 Easy Ways to Take Taco Night to the Next Level

We all love Taco Tuesdays. It’s the easy weeknight meal that makes everyone happy. Taco Night is sometimes a last minute decision for us – but that’s no reason for it not to be a fiesta. Here are 5 easy ways to take your next taco night to the next level.

1. Make a flavored sour cream

Sour cream is a go-to taco topping, but it also serve as a flavor packing vehicle! Add a few dashes of chipotle hot sauce and/or lime juice to 1/2 cup sour cream and give it a good mix. You’ll be shocked at the extra dimension this adds to your tacos (or quesadillas if we’re throwing out options.)

2. Warm your tortillas

Take a few extra minutes to heat your taco shells on the stove. Warm a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Light toast one tortilla at a time for 20 seconds on each side. They’ll be warm and soft but crunchy and oh so delicious!

3. Use a chopped salad/slaw kit in lieu of lettuce

When my husband and I were dating, we purchased a chipotle slaw kit by accident for taco night. It turned out being a happy accident as the mixed up slaw was the PERFECT topping for over the the top tacos. Tacobout a zesty flavor profile!

4. Make your own taco seasoning

Or marinade if you’re making steak, shrimp or grilled chicken tacos. Store bought seasoning and marinade is easy, but sometimes it all just tastes the same. With fresh ingredients and seasonings, you’ll be shocked at how much extra oomph you get with each bite! Looking for a good recipe? I keep my Mama’s Love Rub on hand at all times! It’s a zesty spice ranch that is great on all types of protein.

For ground beef, use as you would a seasoning pouch. Add 2-3 tablespoon with 1/4 cup of water after browning the beef. Stir well until thickened.

For steak, mix 2-3 tablespoons Mama’s Love Rub with 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup lime juice and 1 teaspoon minced garlic in a large plastic zipper bag. Add thinly sliced steak and marinade for at least one hour in the refrigerator. Heat skillet on medium high heat with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add steak in single layer and cook for 2-3 minutes on both sides.

5. Create a taco topping board

Everyone knows presentation is everything. And when a meal includes a lot of components that you build yourself, it’s the perfect opportunity to make a statement. Instead of serving your cheese, sour cream, salsa, etc straight from the store containers, transfer them to small bowls. Stop right there and your table looks like a fiesta. OR, place them on a large cutting board or platter, then carefully pile up your lettuce, chopped tomatoes, cilantro, and tortillas in the gaps. You’ll have a meal that will have people smiling from start to finish – and it really doesn’t require much extra work!
